11:30 am - Sustainable Architecture - Past, Present & Future
Presenter: Sally Anne Smith, AIAMB
This power point presentation shows that before the 20th century, buidings were designed according to the terrain of the land, the local climate and using local materials. With the abundance of cheap oil, buildings no longer addressed these issues and any kind of design was done - example: English Tudor in Southern California and all glass skyscrapers. Today, many architects are revisting the principles of the past and creating new and exciting architecture that is sustainable and beautiful.
12:15 pm - Solar and other Renewable Energy
Presenter: Antony Tersol, Applied Solar Energy
Antony will talk about photovoltaics, now and in the future and will explore the economic, societal and environmental benefits of solar and wind technologies for homes and businesses.
Come with your questions and take part in a discussion of distributed, renewable energy. Ask about solar hot water, wind turbines, backup power, the California Million Solar Roofs program, local permitting, and the impact of fog on solar performance. Learn about California's rebate program and federal tax incentives that can make solar more than affordable.
Antony is a physicist, educator, solar advocate and principal in Applied Solar Energy, a company designing solar energy systems on the Central Coast. With a background in business, science, and computing, he specializes in economic analysis, feasibillity studies, performance simulations, and design/engineering of solar photovoltaic systems.
1:00 pm - Rise Above Plastics
Presenter: Surfrider Foundation, Monterey
The Surfrider Foundation's campaign - Rise Above Plastics - aims to educate the public about the dangers plastics pose to our environment, and what each of us can do to help reduce these impacts. 2:30 pm - Strange Days on Planet Earth Film
Imagine a healthy planet with healthy humans living on it: the world has embarked on a path to clean energy, clean air and fresh water; we are feeding ourselves without compromising land or sea and parents are starting to believe that their children will inherit a better, safer world...
Strange Days on Planet Earth is a multi-year landmark undertaking inspired by this vision of the future. Climate change… Ecosystem degradation… Clean energy… Poverty… Disease… Strange Days on Planet Earth connects some of the greatest issues of our day. It presents problems, currently perceived to be disconnected, hopeless or even harmless, as globally connected, personally relevant and urgent. It brings into focus the realization that the decisions we make today will affect all life on Earth for years to come, and asks the simple but profound question: how do we move these decisions from minor to monumental?
